Microsoft Extends Support for XP

January 21st, 2014 No comments

Well, sort of… Windows XP was originally released in August 2001. The aging operating system was slated to receive its last update on April 8, 2014. Microsoft has extended their security product updates to continue until July 14, 2015. This is a great reprieve for the 28.98% of computer users on the net in December.

Here’s a list of the products from the announcement that will receive the extended coverage:

For enterprise customers, this applies to System Center Endpoint Protection, Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection and Windows Intune running on Windows XP. For consumers, this applies to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Many computer users are still using their older computers because there is no need to upgrade them, some businesses are using the older operating system because legacy systems don’t work on the newer operating systems. Whatever the reason, keeping these computers free of malicious software and viruses is a good thing. When computers are infected, they consume bandwidth and are a vector to infect other computers. The more this is minimized, the better.

LogMeIn Free Discontinued

January 21st, 2014 No comments

LogMeIn Free is a great service that allows remote control of a computer from another computer. That’s all changing with today’s announcement:

After ten years, LogMeIn’s free remote access product, LogMeIn Free, is going away. We will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a single offering. This product will be a paid-only offering, and it will offer what we believe to be the best premium desktop, cloud and mobile access experience available on the market today. We will be notifying those impacted by the change in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, we wanted to take a minute to explain the change and help users of LogMeIn’s access products better understand what this means for them.

Microsoft Releases Windows 8 Consumer Preview | News & Opinion |

Microsoft is getting closer to releasing their newest operating system, Windows 8.  Windows 8 will integrate well into tablets, PCs, or touch-based PCs.  Microsoft seems to be taking some cues from Apple, including an app store.  Although Apple brought the multi-touch interface first, Microsoft is bringing it to their PCs before Apple.  Users will have the opportunity to use their desktops and laptops like their phones and tablets.  I have increasing been finding myself trying to use gestures on my laptop screen.

Blogs Away!

March 3rd, 2012 No comments

It was bound to happen.  It was inevitable.  I wasn’t sure I would ever see this day, but here I am starting my own blog.  It’s kind of funny.  I’m a tech guy, but I can be a slow adopter on the “social” technologies.  Maybe that’s because I am a “computer guy” and therefore lack some social skills or at least I can be more of an introvert.  I created a LinkedIn account early on, but never used it.  I dodged MySpace completely.  I created a Facebook account only because I needed it for information on a class reunion.  But here I am jumping on the blog-wagon.

I’m not sure where this blog will go, but right now I intend to keep it technology focused.  I enjoy new technologies and dream of where it may go some day.  I like thinking of new applications for current technologies.

I can also be very frugal, but I’m not cheap.  There is a difference.  I’m not one who will never spend money.  I like to know that I’m getting great products and that I am getting them at great prices.  I will post some of my better techno-related finds here.
